Conference Workshops & Sessions

SATURDAY, JULY 24th

Networking – 9:30am to 10:00am

Welcome – 10:00am to 10:55am

Grounding Session – 11:00am to 12:00pm
This year’s conference will focus on racial equity.  Before we start, join us and learn some basics on the topics of race, build strategies for getting the most out of each workshop, and engage in some conference self care.

Equity vs Equality – 12:35pm to 2:20pm
Is equity and equality the same thing? What is intersectionality? How does CYC promote racial equity and how can we do it even better in the future? This workshop will break down what equity is, how it relates to intersecting identities of youth in foster care and ways that racism impacts our fight for equality for all.

Implicit Bias/Self Reflection – 2:30pm to 4:00pm
We all have bias but do we all know what bias actually is? This workshop will build off current knowledge of bias and look at the difference between explicit and implicit forms. Members will have space to reflect on ways that bias has impacted their lives as well as how bias shows up in child welfare practices and even foster youth advocacy.

SunDAY, JULY 25th

Racialized History of Foster Care – 10:30am to 12:00pm
This workshop will explore the beginnings of foster care and how historic racial oppression was built into its start. Members will learn about the ways family separation was used as tactics to promote white supremacy and how it correlates to the current foster care and juvenile justice system.

Challenges to Addressing Racism – 12:30pm to 2:00pm
This workshop will delve into the many ways that dominant culture and society minimizes the impact and relevance of racism and challenge notions of colorblindness, meritocracy, and cultural racism. We’ll also look at how all 3 directly and indirectly impact foster youth on an individual level and systemically.

Practical Tools to Increase Anti-Racism in Our Advocacy – 2:05pm to 3:35pm
So what do you do when you see someone being called a racial slur on the street? Or are in a workgroup and someone says something stereotypical about a certain group of youth? This workshop will help build skills in interrupting racism in the moment as well as tools to maintain self care in our journeys to become true and authentic allies in the fight for racial justice.

MonDAY, JULY 26th

For the Cultural Celebration – 10:00am to 11:30pm
Did being in foster care affect the way you saw yourself? Were you affirmed in your cultural identity? This workshop is a safe space for members to uplift their culture and reclaim parts they may have disconnected from. There will be space for talent showcasing, art projects, and activities to reclaim ALL parts of who we are! #BigLove

YPAR Report Showcase – 11:30am to 12:00pm
Our members will also showcase the final published report from their experience in our Youth Participatory Action Research project which took place virtually during the pandemic.
